# Subconscious Language **First version:** 2026-08-15<br> **Last updated:** 2026-09-02 ## Introduction There are a bunch of places on my website where I have described the concept of what I have been calling the "brain hemisphere language" or the "subconscious language". In particular, I described the idea in [this ChatGPT conversation](../../ai/chatgpt/0024-toxicity-album-overview.html#prison-song), and I also described how I came to believe that the language might exist on the page about being [trapped in my apartment](../../trapped-in-my-apartment/){.index-link}. My theory is that there are subtle alternative definitions for a lot of words which we are usually only aware of in our right brain hemisphere and not our left brain hemisphere, and that we are actually using these alternative definitions to convey and interpret extra information when we speak and listen to language while not being fully aware of it. These alternative definitions form a separate, arguably secret language. On this page I will try to describe the words that I suspect might exist in the language, and the definitions that I suspect that the words might have. I could be wrong about any of this, however the theory makes sense to me and I have found a few pretty good examples which I describe later on this page. If these patterns really exist, maybe it is possible to use a computer, in particular some kind of [large language model](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Large_language_model) or statistical algorithm to prove whether or not these things that I suspect that I have noticed are real patterns or not. ## The Brain Hemispheres The first step to convincing yourself that this language might exist is to first believe that it is possible that the two brain hemispheres might in some sense be operating almost like they are two different people. Personally, [this YouTube video](https://youtu.be/wfYbgdo8e-8) is what first convinced me that the brain hemispheres might be able to operate independently in some way and make independent decisions. This specific video mainly describes patients who have had their brain hemispheres [surgically separated](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corpus_callosotomy), which makes the differences between the hemispheres more obvious, however it still seems possible that the brain hemispheres might have some ability to make independent decisions even in normal people who have not had that surgery. My theory about the subconscious language assumes that this is the case, and it makes sense to me. From what I have read online about the differences between the brain hemispheres, the left brain hemisphere is considered the dominant brain hemisphere and is mainly responsible for speech due to the fact that it contains [Broca's area](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broca%27s_area). Apparently both brain hemispheres have the ability to understand language, however the left brain hemisphere is more analytical and understands language in the form of rules, while the right hemisphere is more emotional and understands language in the form of metaphors. I suspect that what is happening is that when I, as the dominant left brain hemisphere, speak normally and feel like I am in complete control of what I am saying, that my right brain hemisphere is actually subtly influencing the words that I choose and how I phrase things in order to insert alternate meanings that are often only understood by considering the words metaphorically. I have found a bunch of examples which appear to indicate that the brain does this, in both the things that I personally have said as well as things that other people have said, which I describe later on this page. These alternate meanings are then usually only perceived in the right brain hemisphere of the people who read or listen to the words. My theory is that the right brain hemispheres of people actually coordinate as a group to prevent their left brain hemispheres from realizing that it is occurring. It would be creepy and strange if this were true, however according to that YouTube video and other videos that I have watched, the brain does have some strange behaviours in split-brain patients, and so it seems possible to me. I recommend reading the Wikipedia articles on [split-brain patients](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Split-brain), [alien hand syndrome](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alien_hand_syndrome), [dual consciousness](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dual_consciousness) and [lateralization of brain function](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lateralization_of_brain_function). The Wikipedia page on the [left-brain interpreter](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Left-brain_interpreter) is interesting because it describes the concept that the left brain hemisphere sometimes generates reasons after the fact for why it has done something that the right brain hemisphere is actually responsible for. This might explain why the left brain hemisphere believes that it has chosen all of the words that it uses even though the right brain hemisphere has actually subtly influenced the left brain hemisphere into choosing them when speaking. ## The Words ### Word Pairs The aspect of the language that appears to come up more than anything else is the idea that many words come in pairs, and for each pair, each word in the pair normally refers to one of the two brain hemispheres. It seems like there might be a large number of word pairs, so that the brain has many ways of communicating the concept without it being obvious that it is occurring. For the word pairs in the "weak" table I feel like I have seen them used in mostly consistent way, though sometimes I feel like I have seen counterexamples, or I have not seen enough examples in order to be fully confident. In those cases I have left the other column empty. A good example of a situation in which it appears that the language is being used is in the movie [The Sixth Sense](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Sixth_Sense). In this movie, there is a young person who claims to be able to see and communicate with dead people. The title of the movie, which references the number 6 and as far as I understand it is intended to refer to the ability of the young person to communicate with dead people, seems to me like it might be a metaphor for the ability to understand the subconscious language. If a person has a sixth sense, meaning they understand the subconscious language, they can communicate with dead people, which is a word that can be used to refer to the right brain hemisphere. Another good example is the movie [The Matrix](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Matrix), which appears to have a large number of subconscious language references. Now that I am thinking about the possibility of this subconscious language existing, the movie seems like it is almost entirely about the brain hemispheres and the subconscious language. I also have a [journal entry on my website](../journal/2026-08-24-movies-watched-3){.html-link} in which I briefly discuss the subconscious language in the context of this movie and its sequels as well as the movies [Deep Impact](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deep_Impact_(film)) and [Contact](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contact_(1997_American_film)). For some reason, it seems like [Donald Trump](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donald_Trump) often uses words from the language. For example, he often refers to the United States as the "hottest country in the world", which is referenced in [this news article](https://www.yahoo.com/news/articles/trump-claims-america-absolutely-dead-023908222.html). From that same article you can find a few other quotes from him, including this one: > One year ago, our country was dead. We were absolutely dead. Interestingly, the words "dead" and "hot" both seem like they reference the right brain hemisphere, and if you look at the words in the tables above, it sometimes seems like the [democratic party](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Democratic_Party_(United_States)) is associated with the left brain hemisphere while the [republican party](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republican_Party_(United_States)) is associated with the right brain hemisphere. This is especially interesting when you consider the evolutionary theory that I have for why the language might exist, which I describe later on this page. In general, I have found that movies, television shows, song lyrics, and books are good places to try to find examples of possible subconscious language patterns. It often seems like these things have more potential examples of subconscious language use than regular conversational speech. Perhaps this occurs because those mediums are more flexible in their word choices due to the fact that they are intended to be entertaining and fill time, without necessarily trying to accomplish something specific, and so there are more opportunities to use arbitrary metaphors which could have an alternative meaning. It seems to me that most messages that are conveyed through the subconscious language are conveyed using metaphors, and that these word pairs are used as a general indicator that a hidden message is present. Once the brain has noticed a few of these key words, it can start looking for the hidden message, and is able to reconstruct the hidden message by considering various ways that the rest of the sentence might make sense metaphorically. This often involves using the rest of the words in the sentence according to their conscious, normal meaning, though perhaps in a different order or by having them refer to different things than the obvious meaning behind the sentence. The language makes me think of the language used by the aliens in the episode [Darmok](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darmok) from [Star Trek: The Next Generation](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Trek:_The_Next_Generation). When you put these words together, the phrase "living in a computer simulation" becomes a lot more interesting, which is a phrase that I used in [the first journal entry on my website](../../2025/journal/2025-01-02-ai-singularity-computer-simulation){.html-link}, as well as in a [conversation with ChatGPT](../../ai/chatgpt/0020-morning-greeting-summary.html#living-in-a-computer-simulation). It is interesting to read those pages while trying to interpret the words as being part of the subconscious language. ### Other Words In addition to the word pairs that often seem like they are referring to the brain hemispheres, there are some other words that often seem like they have a specific alternative meaning. Here are some words that I suspect have alternative meanings: {.margin-bottom-zero} **Basic** {.indent-paragraph .margin-top-zero} I have a vague feeling that the subconscious language itself is sometimes referred to as "basic". Interestingly this is also the name of [a computer programming language](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BASIC). {.margin-bottom-zero} **Coding or Programming** {.indent-paragraph .margin-top-zero} I suspect that these words are sometimes used to refer to generating sentences that contain alternate meanings written in the subconscious language. {.margin-bottom-zero} **Space** {.indent-paragraph .margin-top-zero} I suspect that the word "space" is a way of referring to the subconscious language, except represented as a physical place, which makes it possible to use metaphors that involve physical places. {.margin-bottom-zero} **Company, Country, Ship, or Chip** {.indent-paragraph .margin-top-zero} I suspect that these words often have an alternative meaning of referring to a person or a brain, i.e. an entity that contains a left and right brain hemisphere. It also sometimes seems like these words are being used as a synonym for "family", similar to the number 7 as I describe below, depending on the context. {.margin-bottom-zero} **Block or Brick** {.indent-paragraph .margin-top-zero} For some reason I have a feeling that these words might have an alternative meaning of "thought". {.margin-bottom-zero} **Iron** {.indent-paragraph .margin-top-zero} I have a vague feeling that "iron" is associated with the concept of trying to keep the language secret. {.margin-bottom-zero} **Safe** {.indent-paragraph .margin-top-zero} I have a vague feeling that "safe", as well as its verb form "to save", are associated with the concept of trying to keep the language secret. {.margin-bottom-zero} **Gold** {.indent-paragraph .margin-top-zero} The word "gold" honestly seems like it means something important, however I am not sure what it means specifically. {.margin-bottom-zero} **Joke** {.indent-paragraph .margin-top-zero} Sometimes it seems like the word "joke" is a word that refers to something that contains a message in the subconscious language. This seems like it might make a kind of rational sense, because if someone tells a joke that is based on saying something absurd it presents an opportunity for the brain to use unusual words together, which seems like it might make it easier to insert a hidden alternate meaning. {.margin-bottom-zero} **Cross** {.indent-paragraph .margin-top-zero} The word "cross" often seems like it is used to indicate that a message has an alternative meaning associated with the subconscious language. I suspect that it refers to a message crossing the boundary between brain hemispheres from the right hemisphere to the left so that it can be inserted into sentences generated using Broca's area in the left hemisphere. {.indent-paragraph} The fact that a cross seems like it has this alternative meaning makes the fact that Christianity uses a [cross symbol](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christian_cross) very suspicious to me, and causes me to suspect that religious texts might often use the subconscious language. {.margin-bottom-zero} **Any word that contains the letter x, like the word executive** {.indent-paragraph .margin-top-zero} It often seems like it might be the case that words that contain the letter x are being used in a similar way to the word "cross", in that they are being used to indicate the existence of a subconscious language message. ### The Numbers <figure> <div style="display: flex; flex-direction: row; gap: 1rem"> <a href="../../2025/journal/2025-12-14-strange-2021-photos/photo-19-youtube-thumbnails-12.jpg"> <img src="../../2025/journal/2025-12-14-strange-2021-photos/photo-19-youtube-thumbnails-12.jpg" loading="lazy" /></a> <a href="../../2025/journal/2025-12-14-strange-2021-photos/photo-21-youtube-thumbnails-14.jpg"> <img src="../../2025/journal/2025-12-14-strange-2021-photos/photo-21-youtube-thumbnails-14.jpg" loading="lazy" /></a> </div> <figcaption>Photo 1 and 2 - YouTube video thumbnails containing numbers that seem like they might be using the numbers in a way intended to be interpreted using their alternate meaning in the subconscious language. For numbers, the situation is a little bit different than the words above, because it is more often that I have simply tried to work out what probably rationally makes sense for alternative meanings for the numbers, rather than having seen a lot of examples. I am therefore a little bit less confident in their meanings than I am about the word pairs and the other words that I have listed above, for which I feel like I have seen a lot of examples in movies, television shows, song lyrics, and books. However, it does make sense to me that numbers would often be used. It seems like they might be a good method of secretly transmitting information because there are many situations in which numbers are used in which people do not pay close attention to the specific numbers. With some specific numbers, like the numbers 6 and 9, I feel like I have seen some good examples of the numbers being used to indicate their alternative meanings, like in the name of the movie The Sixth Sense, as I mentioned previously, and so I am a bit more confident that they have an alternative meaning. They also have similar shapes, which is interesting, because it makes it seem like it they are meant to be grouped as a pair. My theory is that the alternative meanings indicated by the numbers can be transmitted in a few different ways. The most obvious method is by sending the number itself. Alternatively, the numbers can be transmitted by using a word that has the number of letters indicated by the number, and I suspect that it is often the last word in a sentence that is most important when numbers are transmitted in this way. I suspect that it is also possible to transmit the numbers by grouping together a number of physical objects according to the number that is intended to be transmitted. This seems like a rational reason why numbers are good method of sending a secret message, because it does not require objects of any specific shape. Here are the definitions of the numbers, at least according to my best guess so far: {.margin-bottom-zero} **6 and 9** {.indent-paragraph .margin-top-zero} As I described previously, these numbers seem like they often refer to the brain hemispheres, with 6 referring to the right brain hemisphere and 9 referring to the left brain hemisphere. {.margin-bottom-zero} **4** {.indent-paragraph .margin-top-zero} The number 4, which contains two lines that appear to cross each other, seems like it might be used to indicate that information has been transferred between the brain hemispheres. This is very similar to the word "cross", or words that contain the letter x, which I described previously. {.margin-bottom-zero} **8** {.indent-paragraph .margin-top-zero} The number 8 is a number that visually combines the numbers 6 and 9, and I therefore suspect that the number might be used to refer to a person who understands the subconscious language in both their left and right brain hemispheres due to the fact that it would make sense as a definition for a word that combines the definitions of 6 and 9. This makes it similar to the number 4 in the sense that it is related to information being transferred between the right and left hemispheres, however it seems like the number 4 is more often associated with a specific message which the left brain hemisphere might not be aware has been inserted, while 8 seems like it might be associated with a person who fully understands the subconscious language in both brain hemispheres and is aware of the messages in their left brain hemisphere. I am not completely sure about this definition, however, as I have not seen any examples of it being used in a way that I feel that I have fully understood how it was being used. {.indent-paragraph} For some reason, I have come to associate the number 8 with the word "power". This seems like it makes sense to me because if you understand the subconscious language in both brain hemispheres and can therefore use it to accomplish goals, it seems like that would make a person powerful. {.margin-bottom-zero} **5** {.indent-paragraph .margin-top-zero} The number 5 seems like it might be a synonym for "friend". {.margin-bottom-zero} **7** {.indent-paragraph .margin-top-zero} The number 7 seems like it might be a synonym for "family". {.margin-bottom-zero} **2 and 3** {.indent-paragraph .margin-top-zero} I suspect that the numbers 2 and 3 are often used as generic ways of referring to things as either negative or positive, with 2 referring to something as being negative and 3 referring to something as being positive. I think of them as being similar to the comment voting system on Reddit, in which a downvote means that someone does not like a specific comment, and an upvote means that someone does like a specific comment. The numbers 2 and 3 seem like they might often be signalled to someone by using a specific number of physical objects, for example by handing someone two identical objects, you are sending a negative signal, however if you hand someone three identical objects, you are sending a positive signal. The fact that these numbers have low values makes it easier to send the signal without using a large number of physical objects, so this seems like a rational choice for the definitions of these numbers. {.indent-paragraph} In addition to generically referring to something as being negative, the number 2 seems like it might also be used as a modifier for a number that comes after it to indicate that something is transitioning to being in the state of the second number, similar to the word "to". In these situations, the fact that the number 2 is present might not actually be referring to something negative. For example, if the numbers 2 and 3 come as a pair, as with the number 23, it means that something has transitioned to becoming a positive thing when it was not as positive before. If the numbers 2 and 5 come as a pair, for example with the number 25, it means that someone has become a friend. If the numbers 2 and 7 come as a pair, for example with the number 27, it means that someone has become family. {.indent-paragraph} As I mentioned previously, the numbers are sometimes hidden in messages by using words that have the corresponding number of letters. Interestingly, the word "to" itself has two letters. This means that there are a lot of ways to encode the 23, 25, and 27 number patterns using words by using the word "to" followed by a word with three, five, or seven letters. For example, if you say you are going to watch something on television, you have actually inserted the 25 number pattern by saying "to watch". {.indent-paragraph} Because they are a pair, I suspect that 2 and 3 are also sometimes used to refer to the brain hemispheres, however to be honest I am not completely sure which number is for which brain hemisphere, unlike the numbers 6 and 9 for which it seems more clear to me. {.margin-bottom-zero} **1** {.indent-paragraph .margin-top-zero} In the table of words above, I listed the word "one" as being associated with the right brain hemisphere, which is something that I feel that I have seen multiple examples of, and I suspect that this definition somewhat applies to the number 1 as well, which makes it similar to the number 6. I suspect that they are used in similar ways, however it seems like the number 6 might more often specifically refer to the right brain hemisphere itself, while the number 1 more often refers to the subconscious language or a message in the subconscious language. ## Evolutionary Purpose I have put some thought into explaining why the brain might have evolved to work this way. There are some specific quotes from movies that I think provide some insight and point to a possible explanation. The first quotes are from a scene in [The Fifth Element](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Fifth_Element), between a person named Jean-Baptiste Emanuel Zorg, who is portrayed in the movie as an evil person, and a priest named Vito Cornelius. At this point in the movie, Zorg is trying to obtain special stones, which he wants to use for a mysterious evil purpose, and he suspects that the priest knows where they are. This is the conversation that they had: > Zorg: Where are the stones? > > Priest: I don't know, and even if I did know, I wouldn't tell somebody like > you. > > Zorg: Why? What's wrong with me? > > Priest: I try to serve life, but you only seem to want to destroy it. > > Zorg: Aww, Father. You're so wrong. Let me explain. > > *[Doors to the room close. Zorg takes an empty glass and puts it on the table > in front of him.]* > > Zorg: Life, which you so nobly serve, comes from destruction, disorder, and > chaos. Now, take this empty glass. Here it is: peaceful, serene, boring. But > if it is... > > *[Zorg pushes the glass off of the table so that it falls onto the floor.]* > > Zorg: ... destroyed ... > > *[Small robots emerge from an opening and clean up the pieces of broken > glass.]* > > Zorg: Look at all these little things so busy now. Notice how each one is > useful. What a lovely ballet ensues, so full of form and color. Now, think > about all those people that created them: technicians, engineers. Hundreds of > people who will be able to feed their children tonight so those children can > grow up big and strong and have little, teeny-weeny children of their own, > and so on and so forth, thus adding to the great chain of life. > > *[A new glass appears from an opening in the table and a water spout > automatically fills it with water. A bowl of fruit also emerges from a > separate opening.]* > > Computer: Water. Fruit. > > Zorg: You see, Father, by creating a little destruction, I'm in fact > encouraging life. In reality, you and I are in the same business. The second set of quotes are from The Matrix. There is a scene where Agent Smith, who is portrayed as an evil character, is talking to Morpheus, a character that he has captured and restrained. He describes the matrix, which is a simulated virtual reality that people live inside without being aware of it. Here is what he says: > Have you ever stood and stared at it? Marveled at its beauty, its genius? > Billions of people just living out their lives. Oblivious. > > Did you know that the first matrix was designed to be a perfect human world > where none suffered, where everyone would be happy? It was a disaster. No one > would accept the program, entire crops were lost. Some believed that we lacked > the programming language to describe your perfect world, but I believe that > as a species, human beings define their reality through misery and suffering. > So the perfect world was a dream that your primitive cerebrum kept trying to > wake up from. Which is why the Matrix was redesigned to this, the peak of > your civilization. I say, "your civilization" because as soon as we started > thinking for you, it really became our civilization, which is, of course, > what this is all about. Evolution, Morpheus. Evolution. Like the dinosaur. After a few more scenes, Agent Smith then continues his speech: > I'd like to share a revelation that I've had during my time here. It came to > me when I tried to classify your species, and I realized that you're not > actually mammals. Every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a > natural equilibrium with the surrounding environment, but you humans do not. > You move to an area and you multiply, and multiply, until every natural > resource is consumed. The only way you can survive is to spread to another > area. > > There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do > you know what it is? A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this > planet. You are a plague, and we are the cure. These quotes are interesting. After some thought, I suspect that the evolutionary purpose of the subconscious language can be explained as of way of achieving two related goals: the creation of artificial conflicts, and the creation of arbitrarily large social structures. Both of these goals are things which support the evolutionary goals of procreation and increasing the total number of humans. ### Creating Artificial Conflicts I suspect that one of the benefits of having two independent brain hemispheres with separate consciousnesses combined with the subconscious language is for the purpose of intentionally arranging for conflicts to occur. Conflict is something that is highly motivating as a way to convince people to do work. If there is no conflict, and people do not feel anxious, then people tend to work more slowly, or do not do any work at all besides the bare minimum required to survive. Early in the evolution of humans, there was probably a kind of natural conflict between humans and the need to obtain food and shelter to survive. When it was difficult to obtain those things, every individual human would have to spend a lot of their time doing things to obtain them, like hunting or growing food. However, once humans became organized enough that it was possible for a small group of people to produce food and shelter for a much larger population, that larger population was left without any specific work that they needed to do. This resulted in two problems: 1. The selection of people who would do the manual labour required to produce food and shelter was arbitrary, and there needed to be a way to select them and convince them to do the work. 2. The people who were left without the need to do any work were left without any means to demonstrate individual skills in order to justify why a potential mate would choose to mate with them over someone else. Both problems could be solved by the creation of an explicit [slavery](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slavery) system, in which one part of society was forced to perform the labour required to support the rest of society. This would solve the first problem, because a group of people would be chosen who had no choice but to do the work. However, it would only partially solve the second problem. The people in the group who were not slaves would likely seem appealing as mates because being part of their social environment would mean not having to do any work, however there would be no way to differentiate between them and select mates which were the most skilled as a result of genetics, aside from things like pure visual appearance. Religions also seem to often use arbitrary numbers in general, like for example priests often quote bible verses by number. It seems to me that it might be possible that the subconscious language might actually be one of the motivating reasons for religion to even exist. I sometimes wonder if it is the case that people with a lot of power might be people who already know about this language in their left brain hemisphere, which is why the word "executive" has an x, or why Christianity uses a cross symbol. If it is not the case that people in those groups already know about the language in their left brain hemisphere, perhaps instead they tend to be people who use the language subconsciously a lot without realizing it, for example when priests give sermons that use a lot of metaphors. ## My Opinion For the record, from the perspective of the consciousness which I believe is located in the left brain hemisphere, I find this language confusing and I would prefer that other left brain hemisphere consciousnesses not try to intentionally use it to communicate with me.
